CURATOR'S STATEMENT

WHY OUR TOPIC IS IMPORTANT

This topic is important because it involves situations that occur in everyday life. While many of us have not personally experienced gender violence, the way that violence occurs due to positions of power has become especially prevalent in light of the #MeToo movement. The #MeToo movement sparked outrage across the United States and across the globe. We have learned that positions of power and authority can often play a big role in violence towards women and children. The need for education and awareness about exactly how many people are affected by gender violence has become exceedingly important. Not only has society begun to realize exactly how much power and authority play a role in violence against women, the number of women who are subjected to violence by a superior or someone who holds power is staggering. The United States is not the only country where power inequalities influence gender and sexual violence. Worldwide we are seeing women speak up and out about violence perpetrated by men of power.

HOW THIS ONLINE GALLERY APPROACHES "THINKING ANTHROPOLOGICALLY"

This online gallery approaches ‘thinking anthropologically’ in terms of gender being a relation to power. Gender inequalities and societal ‘norms’ often play into gender violence and how it occurs in different cultures.

WHAT VISITORS SHOULD NOTICE

As visitors tour our gallery, we would like them to notice how much the #MeToo movement inspired women to call out powerful men all over the world. The organizations referenced in our gallery do an amazing job of fighting to educate and inform the public of sexual violence against women. It is important to see how gender violence affects not only the population in the United States, but across the world.
